ForWind – Center for Wind Energy Research is a joint research centre of the Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg and Leibniz Universität Hannover in Germany.
PhD Position in Wind Energy Meteorology
We invite applications for a PhD position at the University of Oldenburg for 3 years. The salary will be according to the E13 of TV-L pay-scale and is limited to half of the regular working hours.
The successful candidate will work in the group ‘Wind Power Forecasting and Grid Integration’ at ForWind. The focus of the PhD will be to investigate the improvement of very short-term wind forecasts with real-time wind observations. Methods that are used in numerical data assimilation including modelling of observation error covariances will be studied and applied. Updated very short-term wind power forecasts are needed to facilitate the integration of wind power into the transmission grid in extreme wind situations.
The successful candidate will have a master or diploma in Meteorology, Physics or a related field. We expect the ability to work efficiently in a small but growing interdisciplinary team, very good IT skills in a Unix/Linux environment, and good English language proficiency. Knowledge in Numerical Weather Forecasting and meteorological observation handling is desirable. Experience in wind power, boundary layer meteorology, numerical modelling or data assimilation would be an advantage.
The Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and encourages applications from qualified women. Disabled candidates who are equally qualified will receive preference.
Please send your application including vita and list of publications by 23 February 2007 to Oldenburg University, Institute of Physics, Dr. Detlev Heinemann, 26111 Oldenburg, Germany, or by e-mail: beate.clausing(at)forwind.de. Short-listing will start week 9 and interviews are scheduled for week 10 of 2007. The starting date is 15 March 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.
